The filing period for those persons that are interested in running for Alderman is now open. The filing period lasts from April 30, 2008 - May 19th at noon. Forms may be filed with either the Sherwood City Clerk's office or at the Pulaski County Clerk's office.

Who can run for Alderman?
Any qualified elector who has attained the age of 18 and is a resident of the Ward in which they are seeking office. You must file a petition of nomination signed by registered voters within your Ward (Page 91) . You must also file a Political Practices Pledge (Pages 76-77). You must also file a Statement of Financial Interest (Pages 138-157) and a Notice of Candidacy (Page79) (Independent Candidates) .

Typically every one who runs for office in Sherwood, runs as an Independent Candidate. This allows an individual to not have to pay a party affiliation filing fee.

Actually people do not typically run as independents there is no choice. Candidates may state their party affiliation if they wish but it will not be on the ballot.

Of course, there is a choice. You can run as a Democrat or Republican if you are willing to pay the party filing fee and go through the primary process. Since this is only the municipal level, many opt to run as Independents it's far cheaper and less time consuming.

Alderman should only be allowed a full 1 year term. Many good things could be brought about with new blood. Alderman get too position comfortable and will do almost anything to fit in with the other elected Alderman. If they were to challenge a few items, it could mean them working alone. Remember strength is in numbers.........

So, Badkarma - what is your point? Should they challenge a few items or keep working with others for strength in numbers?

I agree with term limits but not just a one year term. The citizens unfortunately voted to allow four year terms, but, of course, the Alderman asked for the election to take place over a holiday. The original legislation for four year terms was written by a position 1 Alderman, seconded by a positions 1 Alderman and voted on by the entire council. Surprised?

I agree we need new blood but it must be good blood and not just the same 'ol thing. We don't need new Sherwood cornbread muffins, since we already have the Sherwood cornbread mafia...
